Just a quick repost, for those folks not on the [info]goteblud list:

GOTEBLÜD PRESENTS

"Yes I Am, But Who Am I Really?"
Queercore zines and ephemera from the late 80s through 90s

Opening Saturday 6/27/09, 6-8pm

Queercore - a music movement of underground LGBT artists - was conceptually birthed in Bruce La Bruce and GB Jones' late 80s Toronto zine, JDs. In the years following, hundreds of like-minded publications exploded onto the scene, creating a global network of formerly isolated but newly united radicals. Founded on a punk rock platform, it wasn't long until zines became records, and a new generation of bands came to define the aesthetics and politics of the movement... a "musical fanzine."

Goteblüd co-founder and curator Matt Wobensmith was there with his own zine and record label "Outpunk", documenting and supporting the nascent movement.

"The zines in this collection are 'queer zines' by definition, but many of them are unique in that music and music culture is a common thread. People forget that prior to the internet, obtaining information on 'alternative' topics was difficult. The record store was where we went to learn and get exposed to new ideas. And we used music and record stores to find our audience - people like ourselves.

Most of the zines were done by young people, and many are in the 'perzine' category, intended for a small group of sympathetic individuals. Alienation is a big theme; many of these zines' creators were just as disappointed by gay culture as the homophobia they encountered. Queercore was about creating a new community, and exchanging survival tips and ideas. And though there was fun and celebration, it still remained quite serious. For many people, these zines were done out of urgency and a dire need to find others, to avoid an impending creative and psychic death."

Also on display - alongside over 200 unique titles - are photos, flyers, posters, correspondence, clothing and skateboards of homopunk heroes.

Goteblüd is a vintage zine store and gallery located at 766 Valencia, between 18th and 19th Streets in San Francisco. The show is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays, from 12-5pm through late August, 2009.

It took us a good long while, but anyone looking for a new Oaf Undies shirt can finally snag one at wuvableoaf.com! Bay Area folks can also drop by the Goteblüd Store and pick one up Sat/Sun from 12-5 PM.

Due to high fan demand, we’ve added XS and XXXL sizes to this batch! They’re the rarest of the bunch, so anyone waiting for one of these should grab it ASAP! We’re probably not going to reprint them again until after Christmas...

On a side note, I gotta say these are the best quality shirts we've made so far. The screen print job is astonishingly detailed, right down to Oafie's little knuckle hairs. Thanks be to Brian at badskulls.com for his stellar work. If you're in the market for reasonably priced custom t-shirts, definitely head over to the site for a quote. BRIAN IS THE BEST!

NOW AVAILABLE: THE BENT COMIX #1 SAMPLER!!!

Photobucket

Jump over to wuvableoaf.com to pick up a copy!

Wuvable Oaf completists, take note: this digest-sized queer comics sampler contains a rare, previously out-of-print Oaf story from PISSZINE #2! The two pager is titled "Wuvable Oaf and the Troff Pig"; it chronicles a wet and mild encounter in the bathroom at the Pee Cock Saloon! Also includes two one page "Worst Date Ever" stories, as featured in Wuvable Oaf #1.

Bent Comix is "a network of California-based queer comics creators who have banded together to try and collectively promote and distribute their work to comics and book stores." Justin Hall, Steve MacIsaac, Dave Davenport, Brad Rader, Sean-Z, Belasco, Sam Saturday, Gravity Faggot and JC Etheredge contributed four page excerpts to the collection, so it's also a great way to familiarize yourself with a variety of creators. Please note, there're alot of boners and acts of sodomy going on in some stories, so if you're not, y'know, into that kind of stuff...you been warned!

In other news: I secured professional status with Comic-Con International, so I’ll definitely be attending the big convention in San Diego, on Friday July 24th and Saturday the 25th. Presumably I’ll be at the Prism booth for a signing or two, so updates are sure to follow.

And lastly, thanks to one or more of my distributors, Wuvable Oafs #0 and #1 are available at two new East Coast locations: Jim Hanley’s Universe in NYC and Atomic Books in Baltimore. It would be wise to check availability beforehand, so folks in those localities should give a ring to see if they’re still in stock.

THANKS TO EVERYBODY WHO CAME TO
THE GOTEBLÜD OPEN HOUSE PARTY!!!

Photobucket

Photobucket

And special thanks to [info]thornyc for serving up (via speedy UPS delivery) theme-appropriate snack cakes for the event! Running with the spot color motif from the recent Money Shot Special, Thor packed two of the Oaf's favorite day-glo snack cakes into a giant box and managed to get them into my hands (all the way from NYC) hours before the opening. And they were almost completely gobbled up by the revelers, whose insides were no doubt temporarily dyed obnoxious colors! Thanks again, Thor...it was a very sweet and thoughtful gift!

All in all, we had a banner opening weekend; I don't think it could have gone much better. And now it's time to get back to work on issue #2...

The Bent Comix sampler will hit the net this Wednesday, along with a corresponding post about it, so keep your eyes peeled!

Here're some more shots of the store, for those that can't get enough! )

Bay Area, you are cordially invited:

Photobucket

Thanks to all those local folks who stopped by during our "soft release" first weekend!

Please join us for our big Open House Party this Friday, May 8th from 7 - 9 PM!

For those zine fanatics among you, get first crack at our fresh stock of vintage books before the feeding frenzy begins! I've spent quite a bit of time pouring over the collection and I have to say, there are some insanely awesome titles to be had! Stuff I wouldn't have dreamed existed...stuff that you probably couldn't find anywhere else in the country right now, at least not in the same store! Punk, metal, riot grrl, goth, queercore fanzines...horror & exploitation film reviews...lowrider books...art rags...amateur porn...crazy obsessive scifi newletters...graf and skateboard zines...I could go on and on and on. If you missed out on the classic age of the zine, check all this stuff out!

And for Wuvable Oaf completists, we'll be debuting a just-released, digest-sized queer comics sampler with a rare, previously out-of-print Oaf story! Some of you might remember my very first published short, from PISSZINE #2? Well, the issue seemed to sell out almost immediately...so I decided to have that two page Oaf tale reprinted in the Bent Comix Sampler, along with two single page "Worst Date" stories from Wuvable Oaf #1. The comic also features stories from nine other west coast queer artists; I'll be doing a special post about it next week when we get it available on-line!

Subject:New Issue, New Characters!
Time:07:23 am
Current Mood:[mood icon] just plain good
The best (and hardest) part of making a comic book is character design. I put a great deal of thought into the rendering of new characters, not just from a physical standpoint but for what they'll contribute to the overall story.

Sex appeal always plays a big role in my initial sketch ideas. Therein lies the incentive for me to draw the character over and over again (I'm a very simple man, after all). But ultimately I hope that eroticism translates for the reader too.

To start, I pull little bits from a wide variety of guys I find attractive and then I try to coalesce them into a distinct look. My encyclopedic knowledge of comic art becomes the filter, as I find cartoony ways of expressing a particular facial feature or hair type. When I can't stop looking at a drawing, I know (at least in my own mind) I have something special and my "crush" begins. Quite often I can't help having little love affairs with each of these characters, a holdover from my youthful days of doodling superheroes.

So, without further ado, here're some new additions to the Oaf Family:

ATTILA, mysterious fifth member of EJACULOID
Photobucket

Short, Hungarian and completely crazy, Attila is Eiffel's secret weapon in EJACULOID. He is neither 'oaf' nor 'bait'...but physically somewhere in between. Because of this, Eiffel feels Attila's presence on-stage doesn't quite fit EJACULOID's image, so he has been relegated to sound man, instrument techie and recording engineer. In truth, it is really Attila's wild, erratic behavior and penchant for breaking into ultra-lame Eddie Van Halen guitar solos that has all but cemented his behind-the-scenes status...for now.

Attila will have a blink-and-miss-it cameo in #2, but I hope to make another mini-comic later in the year that'll be all about EJACULOID. He'll most definitely get some coverage there before his larger role in #3.

And in case you were wondering, [info]thornyc, Attila completes the A, E, I, O, U in EJACULOID (Attila, Eiffel, Izeed, Olaph and Udaho, all told)!

ANOTHER ROCKER & A TRANNY UNDER THE CUT! )

Drawing on Wuvable Oaf #2 is well underway! I hope to post more frequent updates, including teaser art and more character designs, so stay tuned!

Goofy photo of me by [info]bearzbub. Fanx, man!

...for the overwhelming response to the Wuvable Oaf: Money Shot Special, both on-line and at the Prism Comics booth at WonderCon '09!

For those that placed pre-orders, your comics will be going out this weekend...so please sit tight a little longer.

And I hope those that snagged the first batch at the Con got some bang for their buck. I should also apologize to whomever stopped by the booth on Sunday to find they were sold out...but I did warn you they might! If you're local and want to score one from me, don't hesitate to drop me a line here or at wuvable oaf at gmail dot com. I'll do my best to accommodate pick-ups starting next week.

Here's a teaser from "Pig in the City" to tide you over:

On a side note, I just have to shine a spotlight on a recent Oaf review by Joe Palmer, head honcho of queer comics site GayLeague.Com. I was totally blown away by Joe's detailed and insightful read of both books. I mean, he googled the name of Oaf's orphanage to discover its secret origin. That's a super-fanboy for you...! Thanks again, Joe!

WUVABLE OAF MONEY SHOT SPECIAL debuts at WONDER CON!

Photobucket
February 27th - March 1st at Moscone Center, San Francisco

Also available for PRE-ORDER RIGHT NOW at the Oaf Site!

P.S. NOT AVAILABLE IN STORES!

OK, I think that's the major stuff...

As previously announced, this is a 'mega-mini' comic (meaning it's regular comic book size but twelve pages long) in flipbook format. One half is a new Oaf story, 'Pwetty In Pink', which answers the burning question: "What's up with Oaf's pink eyes and teeth"? The second half is a new Smusherrrr story, 'Pig in the City'...which, well...you should just read.

And the centerfold is a double-page spread of the Oaf, BUTT NAKED. No foolin'...except the pages are glued together. It's a unique 'sticky pages' feature, meant to prompt something of a quandary in the reader: Do you peel the pages back, risking damage to your mint comic, to gawk at our beloved Oaf all naked and vulnerable? -OR- Do you leave the pages sealed and preserve his dignity?

The adhesive is super-low tack, archival quality and entirely resealable, so the damage to your comic will be minimal...but what about your soul? What about Oaf's modesty? The choice is up to you!

On a side note, some of you might have been expecting me to have my own booth at Wonder Con this year...but the truth is, I screwed up. Let's call it a mutual fuck up on both my part and Wonder Con's part.

However, I will be debuting the comic at the Prism Comics booth (Space 715), where I'll also be signing Friday the 27th from 5:00 - 6:00 pm and Saturday the 28th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm. I'll be bringing a limited number of Money Shots with me, so if you don't score one at the Con, you can still get one on-line or through me locally...while the run of 200 lasts. That's right, they're hand-made, limited edition, numbered and signed.

Hope to see some of y'all there! FANX!

PWETTY IN PINK
Photobucket
Oafie prepares a snack of Strawberry Fluff, Whoppers, Pocky, Sno-Balls, Shrimp Chips
and Marshmallow Bunny Peeps! Oh, and how could I forget the Strawberry Quik?

The first new Oaf publication of 2009 will debut at WonderCon, here in San Francisco at Moscone Center, from February 27th - March 1st. While I've been hard at work on the designs for issue #2, there's no way it'll be ready that soon, so I decided to make a new twelve page mini-comic for the event. Tentatively titled The Money Shot Special, it features a "flip" book format; one side is a five page, semi-color Oaf story and the other, a five page Smusherrrr adventure.

So what's in the centerfold you may ask? Well, let's just say if you were looking to get another peek at Oaf's endowments, you'll get your chance in this nudie spread...though probably not in the way you might expect. More'n later!

In the meantime, I'm pleased to announce Oaf has found his way into four new locations:

In Los Angeles at Golden Apple Comics, 7018 Melrose and Meltdown Comics, 7522 Sunset Blvd. Thanks to [info]funtarded for his excellent community outreach efforts.

And #1 can now be purchased in Chicago at Quimby's, 1854 W. North Ave. Much wuv to those kind folks for making my cover the header for this week's new releases!

Lastly, local SF folks need to check out the newly renovated and restocked store in The Cartoon Art Museum at 655 Mission. They now carry Oafs #0 and #1, along with a ton of other hard-to-find books and collections. Seriously, I was ooing and ahhing over the selection, in between chats with new manager Heather. She's incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic...I'm expecting great things from both her and the revitalized shop!

As promised, here's a little more info on the Oaf Wreath I donated to a silent auction for Opportunity Impact. First, another shot of it hanging in Gimme Shoes, at 416 Hayes Street between Gough and Octavia:

Photobucket

So, attached below and to the left of the wreath is the silent bid form. You simply place your name, e-mail, phone number and bid on that sheet and you're all set. They'll be making a push for the auction at the Hayes Valley Holiday Block Party tonight (from 6-9 pm at Patrica's Green Park, Hayes and Octavia) but you don't have to attend to bid on the wreath. The store itself will contact the winning bidder after the auction ends tonight (presumably on Saturday some time) and the wreath can be paid for/picked up right from Gimme Shoes. You can pay with check or credit card.

As of last night, there were no bids...so someone could swoop in and grab this original piece for chump change!

Anybody with further questions, don't hesitate to ask...I'm even willing to place bids on your behalf as the store is about a block from my house. Drop me a line with all the vital bidding info at wuvableoaf at gmail dot com and I'll track/update you on bidding and run over there at 6 PM to place the high bidder on the list.

Thanks again everyone!

A few months back Isotope Comics Lounge asked me to create a holiday wreath for a charity auction benefiting Opportunity Impact, an organization that supports at-risk youth. My contribution:

Photobucket
"Santa Clawed" wreath - acrylic on canvas with wire garland, silver bell strands and cat toys

Unfortunately, the organizers of the event don't seem to be too...well, organized. The Hayes Valley Merchant Association's site lists the silent auction as coinciding with their Holiday Block Party, which runs from 6:00 to 9:00 pm Friday, December 5th. But there's no actual location listed for the auction, nor a map indicating where in Hayes Valley my wreath is currently on display.

James, the proprietor of Isotope, hasn't received any clear information about the event either. Since it's all happening tomorrow, I'm going to do my best to get to the bottom of this...so stay posted if you're interested in owning some original Oaf art and helping a worthy cause!

***UPDATE!!!***

Ask and ye shall receive...my wreath is currently hanging at Gimme Shoes, 416 Hayes Street between Gough and Octavia. Bid forms are available at this location and apparently there will be a push for bidding at the Block Party this Friday, December 5 from 6-9 pm in Patrica's Green Park at Hayes and Octavia. I'll repost this tomorrow too!

I really do love you guys!

, [info]funtarded! MEOR!

Wuvable Oaf #1 may have hit the internet and stores on Wednesday...but it officially debuted a few weeks back at this year's Alternative Press Expo! I'll always have a soft spot for this mini-convention; it was the first comics event I attended that made me think, "Yeah, I can do this..."

So I really couldn't have been more excited to actually table this year, alongside mentor Justin Hall and fellow creators Steve MacIsaac and Dave Davenport. There just aren't sweeter gents to while away the hours with. As a relative new kid on the block I feel real lucky to have found an artistic family that's so accepting and enthusiastic.

This year I got to rub elbows with a variety of queer indie comic celebs, including the great Robert Kirby, David Kelly, Jennifer Camper, Mari Naomi and Brad Rader, all of whose work I deeply respect and admire.

And I also got turned on to a bunch of new work, like Janelle Hessig's delightfully misanthropic Tales of...BLARG!, Jed Alexander's disturbingly adorable The Blue Kid and Baby God and the wildy talented Camilla Taylor's zines and soft tentacle sculptures. I even got to reconnect with old school chum and Phoenix art auteur JRC, whose label, onewordlong, features an intriguing mix of spoken word/performance CDs and DVDs.

Lastly, I had an opportunity to pontificate a bit during Justin's queer comics creator panel discussion...

Photobucket

....but forgot to mention the term "Post-Bear" when questioned about the character types represented in my book. Dammit!

All in all it was a highly successful and fulfilling experience. I had no idea how many people were actually into the Oaf! It only emboldens me to take this thing further and further...

Thanks to all those folks who stopped by and made it a truly memorable experience! And thanks so much to [info]technoshark and [info]funtarded for sacrificing their weekends to keep me company! Seeya next year, fer sure!

I couldn't be more honored to have an Oaf story in the brand new Book of Boy Trouble, Volume 2 compilation, as edited by the extraordinary Robert Kirby and Dave Kelly. For those of you not familiar with the Boy Trouble books, they are the last word in queer comics, showcasing a broad range of both illustrative and narrative styles. This particular collection is all-color and I must say I was totally floored by the overall quality of the work. All the artists involved, including the aformentioned authors, Sina Shamsavari, Michael Fahy, Jennifer Camper and Anonymous Boy are at the top of their game!

So, for those of you itching for a color Oaf romp, check out "Chat Attack!", wherein our hapless protagonist is tormented by a series of on-line Mr. Wrongs while video chatting on MuchoMachoMuscleBros.com. Some sample art...

It's worth mentioning that the original 5" x 7" watercolors from the story will be available for purchase at the Alternative Press Expo this weekend.

And so will Book of Boy Trouble, Volume 2, straight from Misters Kirby and Kelly. If you're not able to make it to the Expo, SFers can hit the Market Street Books Inc. Everybody else, check out your local bookstore or order on amazon.com!

And one last announcement: For those who've asked me when the original Oaf Kitty Undies shirt would be reprinted, the answer is:

"NOW, NOW, NOW!!!

Made in extremely limited quantities (like, less than a few dozen after back orders are filled), these will also be up for grabs at APE, with any leftovers hitting the web store in a few weeks.

Oaf with be making his Alternative Press Expo debut this coming weekend! Team Oaf will be standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow creators Steve MacIsaac, Justin Hall and Dave Davenport at tables 515-516 (that's on the right upper level for those familiar with the Concourse).

(PINK FOILED Special Edition...COMING SOON!!!)

Available at the Expo before anywhere else...including the internet!!! In addition, we'll be peddling the remaining Wuvable Oaf #0 Special Editions (only about 25 of 100 are left!), Oaf's Mug mugs and the Slumber Party shirt design...along with free Oafberry pops!

There'll also be a smattering of original art on sale, including an 18" x 24" replica painting of the Oaf in Kitty Undies design and watercolors from the Oaf story in the recently released Book of Boy Trouble, Volume 2 (more on this one Friday).

And for you intellectual types, listen to me wax philosophical at the FIFTH ANNUAL QUEER CARTOONISTS PANEL, moderated by Justin Hall, Saturday November 1st from 3:00-4:00 PM! The press release...is behind the cut! )

I think that bout covers it...so stop by and say hello!
