Current Mood:[mood icon] busy
A quick note for Los Angeles and San Francisco folks:

goteblud,wuvable oaf,ed luce

Goteblüd Los Angeles will be appearing at the Art Los Angeles Contemporary Fair in the Pacific Design Center, this Friday through Sunday, 1/29-1/31 from 12-7pm each day.

The "You Are Her" zine show makes a special appearance at the LA fair, so if you missed your chance to see it in SF, come check it out! Also, Matthew will be displaying a selected sampling of vintage zines from the store along with an array of Oaf comics and the #2 Special Edition. Sorry, Ed is sitting this one out (he's drawing his butt off) but in his place: [info]djmrswhite!!!

Due to this special engagement, Goteblüd San Francisco will be open this coming Saturday the 30th from 12-5pm, but closed Sunday the 31st.

MUCH WUV!!!

New Undies Oaf Shirts in Stock!
wuvable oaf,ed luce
Special thanks to Oaf Models Storm and Ken!

Sizes XS through 3XL are up at wuvableoaf.com!!!

In other news, Wuvable Oaf can now be found in the following stores:

-Forbidden Planet in Manhattan, NYC
-Chicago Comics in, uh...Chicago, IL.
-Bergen Street Comics in Brooklyn, NY.
-Jim Hanley's Universe in Manhattan, NYC.

As always, it would be very wise to call in advance to check on availability. And if they don't have the Oaf in stock at that moment...raise hell!

Also, a personal dream of mine was recently realized: Venerable punk rock rag Maximum RockNRoll reviewed the first Oaf/Goteblüd Single "FEARCE" in their #320 January 2010 Issue. The writer describes it as a "dark grindcore track" with "scary keyboards" which "breaks down for one hot minute".

Sniff...beautiful...(pssst, Wuvable Oaf #2 Special Edition is still available online and at the store)!

Finally, Team Oaf will be crashing the Bear Maul at the International Bear Rendezvous in San Francisco this February 12-14, 2010. More info pending!

Alright, still working furiously on Wuvable Oaf: Ultimate Sacrifice and Issue #3...more n' later!

On the surface, things may have appeared quiet around Oafsville lately...but that only means there’s been much afoot behind the scenes. Here’s a quick update, for those wondering what’s been going on:

ed luce,wuvable oaf

The Golden Gate Xpress recently posted a multimedia profile on the Oaf, titled "Oafs Need Wuv Too". Thanks to Shanon Corbin for his nifty article and hard work on the piece itself...and to Jayne Liu for taking such great photos!

There’s a review of Wuvable Oaf #2 up on GayLeague.com, written by the Joe Palmer. As always, Joe lends some great insights into the subtleties of the storyline; he never misses a thing!

And still another nice review by Micah Spiese, writing for the superhero-centric ComicCultureWarrior.com blog.

Also, Wuvable Oaf #2 is now available at several new locations:

Whatever... Comics at 548 Castro Street in SF
Needles & Pens at 3253 16th Street in SF
Big Brother Comics at 1722 J Street in Sacramento
Quimby’s at 1854 W. North Ave. in Chicago.

***As always, it would be wise to call and check ahead for availability!***

Those that have placed orders in the last few weeks may have noticed the Oaf site has undergone a festive transformation, courtesy of the cutest, cuddliest web designer I know [info]technoshark. Happy Holidays, Everybody!

That’s it for now...look for another update early on in the new year, heralding the first Goteblud Comics 2010 release...WUVABLE OAF: ULTIMATE SACRIFICE!

wuvable oaf #2,ed luce,wuvable oaf

Sometimes I get a bit worried that the Oaf comic is too esoteric for most folks, especially those that aren’t queer or particularly privy to the ‘bear’ scene, as it were. Then I read a review like the one written by Andee, proprietor of Aquarius Records in the Mission (for the record, entirely heteroaf):

"Once again, the big, hairy, doll making, lovestruck punk rock behemoth better known as Wuvable Oaf returns! We've been champions of Luce's crazy creation since the moment we first laid eyes on Oaf and his equally hirsute cadre of pals and lovers and hangers on. Not to mention the kitties!

For those new to the Oaf, in a city, suspiciously like San Francisco, lives the Wuvable Oaf, who spends his days making cool little stuffed dollies, filling them with his shaved body hair, living in a house full of kitties, and pining after Eiffel, the diminutive lead singer of the band Ejaculoid, who are constantly battling their arch rival band, Spincterine, and that's just scratching the surface. There's lots of unrequited love, nightmarish dream monsters, wild punk rock gigs, nightmare dates, aggro-massage, jilted evil ex-boyfriend chefs, blind dates, bands with names like Muff ' N' Top Grrrlz and Wasp Women, a broKENCYDE shirt pops up during a show, so do the bad guys from Superman 2, as does our very own Andee!

It's definitely a wild ride, the art is amazing, super detailed, over the top, there's so much hair everywhere, on the big beefy dudes, on the kitties, it's no wonder why it takes Luce ages to finish each issue, but it's well worth the wait, funny, and fun, and sexy and silly, now we're dying for issue 3, especially after the back page teaser, a big hairy, horned, devil tailed man-beast with the legend "Who is Goteblüd?". Well?? WHO IS IT??????????????
"

...and I realize that I’m doing something right: He totally fucking gets it. The whole damn thing, even the somewhat arcane movie character references. And it excites the hell out of him. And I understand I don’t have to change a thing; I don’t have to pander to a particular audience, I just have to be true to myself, as the well-worn saying goes.

Much wuv to all those who eagerly gobbled up the new issue upon its online release last week! My collaborators are always quick to point out I never take the time to revel in the completion of a project, so I'll just briefly mention I'm very proud of this new book and its accompanying record. But I'm even more excited to begin work on the next chapter!

Fast forward three weeks: I get an e-mail congratulating me on my nomination for a 2009 Ignatz Award in the “Promising New Talent” category! Very strange coincidence, indeed...?!

The awards are voted on and given during the Small Press Expo, September 26-27, 2009. I’ll be posting more info closer to the date, for those looking to support us at the event!

In other news: As of this very moment, Wuvable Oaf Money Shot is down to four copies, so if you’ve been waiting to pick one up...this is it! I will not be choosing to reprint the spot-colored Oaf story in this issue, simply because it is time and cost prohibitive. So the only way this tale will ever see print again is if someone else publishes it (and I wouldn’t hold my breath for that)!

Alright, back to work...Oaf #2 is coming along nicely! More on that soon!

The Jumbo-Tron projection makes my head BIG.

Comic-Con International was a total blast; I don’t think things could have gone much better for me or the Oaf. It’ll definitely be hard to top the experience I had...but you can bet I’ll try next year!

Much wuv to all the folks who stopped by to chat and pick up my stuff! I had no idea there was such a devoted following out there...it was pretty fucking amazing. Special thanks to the hard-working guys at Prism Comics and Andy Mangels for making my first one unforgettable!

Some highlights:

-Within minutes of arriving at the Con and dropping my stuff at the booth, we chanced to pass Buffy/Dollhouse creator Joss Whedon wandering the comics section. He’d just finished talking to some fans and had only taken a few steps towards us, so I felt it would have been rude to stop him. Instead, I gave him a big smile, which he meekly returned, as if to say “Please, don’t throw yourself at me." He passed and seconds later we heard someone call out, “You’re JOSS”! I kind of felt bad for him...

-That Friday, I had the pleasure of meeting [info]titoagogo, [info]bearringsd and [info]sunbeam_bears for the first time. John dropped off a whole bunch of his Fat Free Comics work, which I will most certainly be blogging about in the not too distant future. I also had the pleasure of reconnecting with [info]ironchefpinoy. I finally got to meet his good buddy Pato and we shared an excellent meal together following the close of my first Con day.

Oh, and how could I forget bumping into [info]callingzero?! We always seem to end up in the same place at the same time, every few years...

-Oafs, oafs and more oafs stopped by the Prism booth...if only I had a camera on hand to capture the parade of hotness. One young guy, possessed of the quintessential oaf physique, was particularly enthusiastic about the character and black Undies shirt design. He said it reminded him of his most recent Halloween costume; he dressed up as Mark Spitz, in just a Speedo. While signing his comics, I flirtatiously asked if there were pictures of the outfit on-line. He somewhat nervously replied "yes"...on Facebook, he thought...then proceeded to fumblingly purchase his merch and shake my hand farewell. A booth mate who’d been chatting with him earlier exclaimed, "That guy's so fucking beautiful...too bad he's straight!"

Eep...my bad. Subsequent googlings of "Mark Spitz Halloween costume" proved fruitless.

-Buffy Alert, Part II: Amber Benson, AKA Tara from Buffy, miraculously appeared at the Prism booth Saturday afternoon. I told her she was my favorite character (as I have been known to publicly announce), which evoked a series of sweet cooings from her. She proceeded to pick up an Oaf #1 and giggle at the first few pages.

-Within minutes of making his acquaintance, comics god (and huge personal inspiration) Phil Jimenez turned to me and declared, "You're delightful." I'd definitely have to say the same of him.

-At the start of the "Gays In Comics" panel, poor Andy fumbled a bit with the pronunciation of my last name, so I helped him by shouting, "It's Luce, as in the opposite of tight".

-I got to coin the phrase "Heteroaf" during the Q & A, which got a surprisingly loud roar from the crowd. But really, there is a character in the works with that name...

And lastly...here's a bunch of pictures behind the cut... )

Wuvable Oaf: Gory Details Debuts at the
San Diego Comic-Con International ‘09!

wuvable oaf,gory details,ed luce

Friday & Saturday, July 24-25th

Greetings, Everybody!

Oaf and I will be making the rounds at our very first Comic-Con International...this weekend! I’m scheduled to be signing at the Prism Comics booths (#2146-2148) from 2:15 to 7:00 on Friday and 1:30 to 5:45 on Saturday.

Attendees of the convention have first grabs at Wuvable Oaf: Gory Details, an Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe -style profile and picture book, which covers all the major Oaf characters (plus some debuting in Wuvable Oaf #2). This book won’t be available in stores or on-line til the fall, so it’s kind of a “Con Exclusive”! In addition, I’ll have a limited number of Money Shots (they’re very nearly gone!), along with plenty of Oafs #0 and #1. Oh, and Kittie Undies Shirts galore!!!

I’m also incredibly honored to be taking part in Andy Mangels’ “Gays In Comics” panel...here’s the rundown:

SATURDAY NIGHT-
6:00-7:30 Gays in Comics: Year 22!- Now in its third decade at Comic-Con, the long-running "Gays in Comics" panel presents an all-star look at the diversity in the comics world today. The mainstream companies DC and Marvel are both front-lining gay characters such as Batwoman and Northstar, as well as top-level gay or gay-friendly creators. And smaller independent publishers and creators are publishing unequivocal content spotlighting gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered characters, to the cheers of the thousands of fans who are out of the comic book closet. This top-level panel of GLBT and straight creators will give amazing insights and glimpses of surprises to come! Joining founding moderator Andy Mangels (best-selling author of Star Trek novels and Iron Man: Beneath The Armor)are: Greg Rucka, the acclaimed author of Detective Comics (featuring the lesbian Batwoman and The Question); Phil Jimenez, artist of Astonishing X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man; Gail Simone, the celebrated writer of Wonder Woman and the sexually diverse Secret Six; Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the GLAAD-winning writer of Marvel's Divas and Stephen King's The Stand and HBO's smash hit polyamorous drama Big Love; Peter David, writer of Fallen Angel and lots of novels; Perry Moore, whose gay teen super-hero novel HERO will soon be a TV show produced with Stan Lee; Ed Luce, the writer/artist of the Bear-centric Wuvable Oaf and small-press retailer behind San Francisco's cutting edge Goteblüd comic and zine store; and small press and Internet sensation writer/artist Sina Grace, whose Books with Pictures and illustrated novel Cedric Hollows in Dial M for Magic are getting rave reviews online and from Hollywood personalities! Plus, there's always a surprise or two. Afterward, stick around for the hour-long gay comics fan mixer/social, hosted by Prism Comics, with prizes and surprise special guests! Room 6A

7:30-8:30 Gays in Comics Mixer- Prism Comics, the nonprofit organization that supports gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered comics, creators, and readers invites you to mingle with comics fans and creators. Plus stay for the special drawing of a "Comics Gift Basket" and bid on some hot comics items! Room 6A

Needless to say, I’ve been enjoying the work of most of these folks for years (and in some cases decades), so I couldn’t be more thrilled to be sitting beside them!

As if that weren’t enough, I gotta give a shout out to the new Prism Comics Guide ‘09/’10, also debuting at the Con. Amongst a myriad of queer comic goodness, you’ll find an article about the Oaf written by my good buddy Matt Johnson (aka [info]badfaggot). Matt understands my comic far better than even I do and I was blown away by his insights, so be sure to grab a copy! Also: It has a one-page preview of Wuvable Oaf #2!!! Hit the Prism booth at the Con (again, #s 2146-2148) or check the site for more details: www.prismcomics.org

Lastly, Praise be to [info]thornyc for some invaluable advice during early preparations for the Con! Thanks again, Thor!!!

Awright, that’s it for now...hope to see a bunch of you in San Diego! Everybody else, keep enjoying the summer!

Just a quick repost, for those folks not on the [info]goteblud list:

GOTEBLÜD PRESENTS

"Yes I Am, But Who Am I Really?"
Queercore zines and ephemera from the late 80s through 90s

Opening Saturday 6/27/09, 6-8pm

goteblud
Photo: P Paula P

Queercore - a music movement of underground LGBT artists - was conceptually birthed in Bruce La Bruce and GB Jones' late 80s Toronto zine, JDs. In the years following, hundreds of like-minded publications exploded onto the scene, creating a global network of formerly isolated but newly united radicals. Founded on a punk rock platform, it wasn't long until zines became records, and a new generation of bands came to define the aesthetics and politics of the movement... a "musical fanzine."

Goteblüd co-founder and curator Matt Wobensmith was there with his own zine and record label "Outpunk", documenting and supporting the nascent movement.

"The zines in this collection are 'queer zines' by definition, but many of them are unique in that music and music culture is a common thread. People forget that prior to the internet, obtaining information on 'alternative' topics was difficult. The record store was where we went to learn and get exposed to new ideas. And we used music and record stores to find our audience - people like ourselves.

Most of the zines were done by young people, and many are in the 'perzine' category, intended for a small group of sympathetic individuals. Alienation is a big theme; many of these zines' creators were just as disappointed by gay culture as the homophobia they encountered. Queercore was about creating a new community, and exchanging survival tips and ideas. And though there was fun and celebration, it still remained quite serious. For many people, these zines were done out of urgency and a dire need to find others, to avoid an impending creative and psychic death."

Also on display - alongside over 200 unique titles - are photos, flyers, posters, correspondence, clothing and skateboards of homopunk heroes.

Goteblüd is a vintage zine store and gallery located at 766 Valencia, between 18th and 19th Streets in San Francisco. The show is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays, from 12-5pm through late August, 2009.

It took us a good long while, but anyone looking for a new Oaf Undies shirt can finally snag one at wuvableoaf.com! Bay Area folks can also drop by the Goteblüd Store and pick one up Sat/Sun from 12-5 PM.

Due to high fan demand, we’ve added XS and XXXL sizes to this batch! They’re the rarest of the bunch, so anyone waiting for one of these should grab it ASAP! We’re probably not going to reprint them again until after Christmas...

On a side note, I gotta say these are the best quality shirts we've made so far. The screen print job is astonishingly detailed, right down to Oafie's little knuckle hairs. Thanks be to Brian at badskulls.com for his stellar work. If you're in the market for reasonably priced custom t-shirts, definitely head over to the site for a quote. BRIAN IS THE BEST!

Wuvable Oaf completists, take note: this digest-sized queer comics sampler contains a rare, previously out-of-print Oaf story from PISSZINE #2! The two pager is titled "Wuvable Oaf and the Troff Pig"; it chronicles a wet and mild encounter in the bathroom at the Pee Cock Saloon! Also includes two one page "Worst Date Ever" stories, as featured in Wuvable Oaf #1.

Bent Comix is "a network of California-based queer comics creators who have banded together to try and collectively promote and distribute their work to comics and book stores." Justin Hall, Steve MacIsaac, Dave Davenport, Brad Rader, Sean-Z, Belasco, Sam Saturday, Gravity Faggot and JC Etheredge contributed four page excerpts to the collection, so it's also a great way to familiarize yourself with a variety of creators. Please note, there're alot of boners and acts of sodomy going on in some stories, so if you're not, y'know, into that kind of stuff...you been warned!

In other news: I secured professional status with Comic-Con International, so I’ll definitely be attending the big convention in San Diego, on Friday July 24th and Saturday the 25th. Presumably I’ll be at the Prism booth for a signing or two, so updates are sure to follow.

And lastly, thanks to one or more of my distributors, Wuvable Oafs #0 and #1 are available at two new East Coast locations: Jim Hanley’s Universe in NYC and Atomic Books in Baltimore. It would be wise to check availability beforehand, so folks in those localities should give a ring to see if they’re still in stock.
